For once the wind isn't the problem. A calm, hot, monsoon-flavored week — upper 90s by Friday, lightning over the peaks some afternoons — and a Humboldt that has all but stopped moving. Go high, go early, and be watching the sky by noon.
Monsoon moisture opened the week — enough for a flood watch over the burn scars Tuesday — and now the heat takes over: 94° Wednesday, pushing 98° by Friday, with barely a breath of wind all week. The valley river is the casualty. The Humboldt is down to a trickle — single-digit flows past Carlin — so the fishing is uphill and early, full stop. The high lakes are cool and eating, the reservoirs give you a two-hour dawn window, and afternoon thunderheads over the Rubies mean you want to be off the exposed country by early afternoon Thursday and Sunday.
Still the best game in the county. Callibaetis are coming off mid-morning and the brookies are on them; ants and beetles get the cruisers between hatches. Afternoon cells build fast over the crest this week — fish the morning, be headed down when the towers stand up.
Surface temps are climbing and the trout have gone deep — this is a first-light fishery now, done by 9. Wipers at South Fork are still crashing bait on the calm mornings; watch the flats off the dam. Keep an eye out for algae as the heat settles in, and give the trout a pass once the sun is high.
The Humboldt is functionally out of the game — 2 cfs past Elko, 9 past Carlin, warm and shrinking pools. Leave it alone until the monsoon or fall gives it a drink. Lamoille Creek is the substitute: cold out of the canyon, fish it to mid-morning with a thermometer, and back off past 67°F.
High creeks are in good morning shape and the redbands and Bonnevilles are looking up. Storm cells can slick the roads and put a foot of visibility in a creek in an hour — check the sky before the long drive. Bull trout in the Jarbidge go straight back, as always.
The mid-morning event on the high lakes right now. Fish it on the flats where the cruisers are working — cast to the path, not the fish, and let it sit.
Hot, still July mornings put ants on the water and the brookies know it. The in-between-hatches fly at the Ruby and East Humboldt lakes — twitch it once.
Lamoille Creek's morning shift. Purple or tan, tight to the banks and shade lines, with a #16 beadhead below for the fish that won't come up.
For the South Fork wiper boils at first light. Chartreuse-and-white, cast past the bust and strip through it fast — have it rigged before you need it.
Over Liberty Pass from Road's End at the top of Lamoille Canyon — a stout climb, and worth every step this week. Deep, cold, gin-clear water where big brookies cruise the drop-offs at mid-morning while the valley cooks. Start hiking at dawn, fish until the clouds build, and be back over the pass before the lightning show.
